EVIDENCE BASED TRAINING IN THE ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT OF SUSPECTED OPIOID OVERDOSE

Overdoses from opioids have surpassed motor vehicle collisions as the leading cause of deaths in the United States. The Tennessee Hospital Association and the Tennessee Department of Health are partnering to offer informative life-saving training.
PARTICIPANTS WILL LEARN HOW TO:
• Define the term “opioid” and list substances that are classified as opioids
• Recognize the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose
• Understand the treatment priorities for patients with suspected opioid overdose
• Understand the potential adverse effects following administration of naloxone
• Describe the safety precautions recommended for prehospital providers
Trained emergency responders to include law enforcement officers, fire-based first responders emergency medical services (EMS) practitioners and non-traditional licensed first responders (i.e. school nurses). This training module is not intended for use by non-trained civilian bystanders.
This educational program has been approved for four continuing education contact hours (CECHs) or 0.4 continuing education units (CEUs) by the Tennessee Department of Health Office of EMS.
DATES AND LOCATIONS:
This session will be offered in eight locations with training provided by EMS professionals in a small setting to allow participants to receive hands on training.
